Russ & Daughters

Russ & Daughters

For decades Russ and Daughters has provided “as good as it gets” lox, herring, caviar, salads and anything else needed for a traditional Jewish feast. The food is what it is all about for me, but the friendly service with familiar faces are a nice touch.

Nova at Russ & Daughters

Please “take a number” if you plan to enjoy Russ & Daughters on the weekends. Last time, I was #39 and they were serving #22. It was worth the wait though.

Inside Russ & Daughters

The cool thing about Russ and Daughters is the way they effectively took all that was great about the place from history and effectively modernized it. They now have a cool logo, bright lighting, they get PR, they have a blog, a twitter feed, etc. Unlike many places in the neighborhood that have seen better days, Russ & Daughters is well positioned for the next generation (maybe it will become Russ and Daughters and Granddaughters).

Second Avenue Deli

Second Avenue Deli is the best Kosher Deli  in NYC. Love the Matzo ball soup and the other soups including split pea and beef barley. Love the corned beef and tongue. The “free” health salad, pickles, and sour tomatoes as starters and the shot of egg cream at the end is a nice touch.

My wife and I came up with a way to save when we dine at 2nd ave. Order one soup and share and one sandwich with a few extra slices of bread. With the pickles and health salad, it should be more than enough for two. if you are still hungry, order a Knish or grab a slice at Pizza 33 across the street.

Second Avenue Deli

The service is abrupt but efficient. I always like the “old school” waitresses.

Don’t forget Dr. Brown’s sodas.

I think they would have been better off investing in a larger place when they moved up to 33 & 3.
